Why I Drink Matcha Instead of Coffee During My Follicular Phase

The follicular phase is like a little sunrise in your cycle. Your hormones are starting to rise, your mood lifts, and suddenly you feel more like you again after your period. It’s a time for fresh starts, creative energy, and gentle build-up — and for me, it’s also the perfect time to swap my coffee for a big, frothy matcha.

Here’s Why I Make the Switch

A few years ago, I was a total coffee girl. Flat white first thing, iced latte mid-morning… and then wondering why I was jittery, anxious, and crashing by 3pm. It wasn’t until I started learning about my cycle that I realised how much caffeine can play with our hormones — especially during phases when we’re already a little more sensitive.

Matcha still gives you that gentle lift (thanks to caffeine), but it’s teamed up with L-theanine, an amino acid that helps you feel calm and focused rather than wired. During the follicular phase, when oestrogen is steadily rising, this kind of calm, sustained energy feels so much better than the rollercoaster of coffee highs and lows.

The Follicular Phase Energy Shift

This phase is all about building momentum. You’re coming out of menstruation, your body is feeling more energised, and it’s the perfect time to start adding in slightly more intense workouts, trying new projects, and being a bit more social.

For me, that means I want energy that’s steady — not the kind that peaks for an hour and then leaves me napping at my laptop. Matcha keeps me in that sweet spot all morning without the crash.

The Skin Bonus

One thing I’ve noticed since making the switch? My skin looks calmer. Coffee can sometimes spike cortisol, which in turn can play a role in breakouts or dullness. Matcha is rich in antioxidants, which help fight inflammation and keep that follicular-phase glow going strong.

How I Make It

My go-to is:

  • 1 tsp ceremonial grade matcha

  • Splash of hot (not boiling) water to whisk it smooth

  • Top with unsweetened almond milk

  • ½ tsp maple syrup if I want something sweeter

The Sync With Georgia Connection

Inside Sync with Georgia, I’ve built entire recipe collections for every phase of the cycle — including a Matcha Bar with my favourite hormone-friendly drink ideas. Whether it’s follicular phase matcha, a luteal-phase cacao latte, or a period-friendly ginger tea, you’ll know exactly what to sip to support your hormones.

Since switching to matcha during my follicular phase, I’ve honestly never looked back. It’s like giving my body the exact kind of energy it’s asking for — steady, calm, and just enough to carry me through my morning feeling amazing.
